A day heralded by mist that reduces visibility to two meters is a day bound to be full of mystery.
Our morning has started in a big way. The First Lady of Machakos County, together with the county health department bosses are here to meet the team. The First Lady is extremely passionate about breast and cervical cancer prevention and she drives a huge awareness and screening campaign in the area. She fully appreciates the sacrifice our five heroes are making and continues to encourage them. She engages the team, talking about what drives them in this campaign and even Daniel, who is the most reserved of them all, is able to chat freely even in the face of the cameras. Her generosity towards the campaign is very well appreciated. We do not take it for granted!
After a colourful flag-off, the team sets off to Salama. It is a gruelling 45+ km walk. Just when you think the body has take all the beating it can, the heroes march forth, steadfast in their mission. The pace is punishing, the road is rough with diesel smoke and dust but there is no slowing down. They arrive in Salama in less than six hours! You can't beat that!
Our great hosts for the day, the ACK guest house are ready to receive the team. Real generosity is displayed when they have to knock down the arch of their gate to allow the overland truck to fit through as it is too high! Not only do we have a safe, comfortable and private campsite, we have access to the swimming pool too! Anyone for a swim?
