The human mind is a very powerful control.
Our heroes are people used to a peaceful quiet lifestyle. They go to bed early, with still silent nights broken by the chirping of birds in the morning, they rise early to a predictable organised day.
The last few weeks, they have had their lives turned upside down. Most of our campsites are on the roadside along major highways. The nights are characterised by rumbling trucks, hooting of overnight buses as they roar by, sometimes thunderstorms through the night that leave one chilled to the bone.
These amazing men have never complained. They take it all in stride, rising each morning with great cheer, ready to face another long day on the road. Some camps don't even afford them much privacy but it's never been an issue that dampens their resolve.
Today the team spent the night in Athi River, and thanks to the Green Garden hotel, there was access to proper bathroom facilities and hot showers. Things we don't take for granted.
This journey has made me meet great people, who have reminded me of our real African spirit. Sometimes we get cynical and forget but a good reminder every once in a while warms the heart. Angela is one such person. She has opened up her cosy little hotel, Elena Place, to the team without reservation. All we needed to say was that we were the Step by Step campaign team. Together with her hostess Vickie, the sweetest girl I Machakos County, we feel at home. From unlimited access to all we needed, to warm Masai blankets to keep us warm in the gazebo as we watch the news, we feel taken care of.
Her little haven is on the top of Mua Hills with the freshest air and the stillness of a hideaway. Even if the mist starts settling in by 10.00pm, we are happy to be here. We continually give thanks for the angels along our way. Angela has been one such.
