The second leg of this journey begins today!
The team is ready and eager, after a day of rest at the Sarova Panafric. An early breakfast and a warm flag-off by the MD, Sarova Hotels and Resorts, Mr. Vohra, is in order.
While the flag-off ceremony continues, Thomas Chacha and I have an opportunity to link up with our staunchest supporter and a woman of iron will, Mrs. Janet Kanini Ikua, as guests of Kobi Kihara on AM Live morning show on NTV.
I couldn't even begin to describe Janet. To the public, she is a public figure who beat stage four lung cancer. A miracle to say the least. To me, she is larger than that. She is a living mountain that moved on command. Here is someone who watched her dad suffer and succumb to lung cancer, only to be handed the same diagnosis a few years later. How cruel can life be? Lung cancer isn't one of those cancers known to have a genetic predisposition. It was unexpected, especially having been a missed diagnosis for over a year.
Janet is amazing in how she not only caged this beast, but on how she has in turn dedicated her life to fighting cancer through every available means she can put to use. She still remains a dedicated wife and mom to her adorable babies, and spends endless hours online encouraging patients and families dealing with cancer. She visits those in hospital and is a powerful pillar for those in need of support.
Does this wear her out? On the contrary, she seems to thrive off it. She only gets stronger and stronger every day. She has embraced the Step by Step campaign with gusto and I can only applaud her from the sidelines. She is tough nut in the face of despair and rides the storm like a true champ.
These are the people we need in this country. I may have known her personally for only a short while, but I see the fire burning in her and I know we are kindred spirits in our cause. Her triumphs move many to tears and I have witnessed that first hand. I must say, I am priviledged to know her.
Today as our heroes embark on the second leg of this journey, one beset with many perils, from heavy traffic, to polluted smoky air, to dangerous drivers with no appreciation for their sacrifice, to crossing the Tsavo park full of dangerous wildlife, it is good to know that fellow heroines like Janet are rooting for them. Pray for their safety, and make their sacrifice worthwile.
With that in mind, I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to well wishers who made their donations in kind to the team. Sameer Foods gifted the team with milk, yoghurt and bottled water for the journey. Ms. Waringa brought all the flour we need for the 21 days remaining! The Sarova team is still waiting for us in Mombasa at the Sarova White Sands Beach Resort and Spa.
We appreciate every gesture, kind word, social media support, roadside applause...Keep them coming, they keep us going!!!!
