Today has been a long day.  The walk went well, the team covered 29km in a record 5 hours and kept ahead of the rain all day. We arrived safely in Bomet and we were warmly welcomed to the Brevan Hotel by the owner herself, Mrs. Ruth, and her staff. The hotel is a quaint little place with a well tended garden where we set up camp.
We settled in and had a cup of tea before we headed off to meet with the Governor of Bomet County, Hon. Isaac Rutto. I must commend him for being the first Governor to meet the team! It was quite something I must say. Despite presence of the press, he let down his guard and talked of his beloved daughter whom he lost to leukaemia. He also relieved the agony his father went through for three years before he passed on, as a result of cancer. His loss has spurred him on to honor his daughter's memory in the only way that he knows would make her smile, the Chepcricket Cancer Centre. His team is in the process of laying the foundation to establishing a Ksh. 6 billion regional cancer centre that will be a result of massive collaborative efforts from within and without the region.
The governor's dedication to fighting cancer finds kindred spirit in the Step by Step campaign. To this end, he has generously pledged Ksh. 500, 000 towards the cervical cancer fight! Bless his soul. In addition to his generous support, in true african spirit, he hosted the team to dinner and at least for tonight, the tents were traded for a warm bed with a proper shower and toilet!
It's almost 2.00a.m. and I am curled up in bed, grateful for the warmth and thankful for the journey thus far. We have covered 160km so far and we are getting used to the aches and pains. New blisters come up as old ones heal. Nyangi's baby is much better and both Daniel's and Peter's kids are getting care. Tomorrow will be a better day! I know so.
